Before You Book

Passport & Documentation Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates — many countries enforce this rule strictly. If you need to renew or apply for the first time, start the process as early as possible. Processing times can stretch to 10–13 weeks during busy periods, and expedited service adds cost.

Visa Requirements Most Caribbean and Mexican destinations don't require visas for U.S. citizens, but requirements vary widely for European and other international destinations. Always confirm visa requirements for every country on your itinerary well in advance. Your travel agent can help flag anything you might need.

Travel Insurance Travel insurance is something I strongly recommend for any international trip — especially for European travel, cruises, and high-investment vacations. It covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies abroad, lost luggage, and travel delays. Ask me about options when we're planning your trip.

At the Airport

TSA Tips & Security Getting through airport security efficiently makes a real difference to your travel day. A few things worth knowing:

  • TSA Travel Tips — What to expect at security checkpoints

  • TSA Prohibited Items List — Check this before you pack to avoid surprises at the gate

  • TSA PreCheck, CLEAR and Global Entry are worth the investment if you travel more than once a year — they significantly speed up both security and customs re-entry

Flight Tracking

Planning Tools

Weather

  • Holiday Weather — Look up average weather for any destination during any month of the year. Useful for deciding when to go.

Currency

  • XE Currency Converter — Live exchange rates for every currency. Bookmark this and check it before you leave so you have a sense of what things will cost.

Time Zones

  • World Clock — Find the current time and time zone for any city in the world. Helpful for coordinating with hotels and tour operators abroad.

Language

  • Google Translate — Useful for basic communication in non-English-speaking destinations. Download the app and save your destination's language offline before you leave — it works without wifi.

International SIM Cards & Data

  • Airalo — One of the best kept secrets in travel. Airalo is an eSIM marketplace that lets you buy a local data plan for your destination before you even leave home. Instead of paying your carrier's international roaming rates (which can be shockingly expensive), you purchase a digital SIM card for your destination country or region — prices typically start around $5–$10 for a week of data. No physical SIM card swap needed, and it works on any unlocked eSIM-compatible smartphone. I recommend this to almost every client traveling internationally. Check that your phone is eSIM compatible before you buy.

On the Ground

Reviews & Recommendations

  • TripAdvisor — Helpful for reading reviews of hotels, restaurants, and attractions. The travel forums are particularly useful for destination-specific questions. That said, take individual reviews with a grain of salt — I've seen beautiful properties get unfair one-star reviews and mediocre ones get glowing write-ups. Context matters.

  • Cruise Critic — The most trusted cruise review site; useful for ship and itinerary research

Europe Travel

  • Rick Steves Audio Europe App — Free audio walking tours for dozens of European cities. If you're heading to Europe, download this before you leave. It's one of the best free travel resources available.

  • Rome2Rio — Shows every way to get between two destinations in Europe (train, bus, flight, ferry)

  • The Man in Seat 61 — The definitive guide to European train travel

Quick Packing Tips

A few things I remind every client before they travel:

  • Carry your medications in your carry-on, never in checked luggage — delays and lost bags happen

  • Make digital copies of your passport, travel insurance, and all booking confirmations and store them in your email or cloud storage so you can access them anywhere

  • Bring a small power strip (without a surge protector) if you're cruising — cabin outlets are scarce

  • Notify your bank and credit cards of your travel dates before you leave to avoid having your card flagged for international charges

  • Download offline maps for your destination using Google Maps before you leave — invaluable when you don't have wifi or a local SIM
